Laws & requirements for tableware

 

Over the past 30 years, the European Union and a large number of offices and authorities have removed "tableware" from the legal vacuum and imposed a large number of regulations and requirements. In this paragraph and the following pages, we explain the requirements and regulations for the European Economic Area that are important for commercial use.

 

 

Definition of raw materials

In order to distinguish between the different qualities of porcelain and ceramics, there are only customs law definitions, some of which differ considerably from those used in materials science. The raw material properties can be marked voluntarily according to DIN EN-1900.

Classification of the species Not required by law. A customs grouping of the ceramics types is carried out according to DIN EN-679/72.

Definition of the firing temperatures

Not required by law.

Dimensional accuracy

For calibrated goods regulated by DIN-66072

Color tolerances

Not required by law.

Surface Hardness

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-15771.

Porosity Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to  DIN EN-623-2.
Absorption Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-1217.
Transparency Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-1184.

Edge Impact Resistance

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to Ceram PT32 and DIN EN-12980.

Food suitability

Legally regulated by the LFGB (Europe) and FDA (USA & Canada) Test procedure according to DIN 10955 2004-06, as well as DIN ISO 4531-2-2015

Fill lines & calibration

Legally regulated by the calibration law.

Dishwasher safety

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN-EN-12875-1 / 2002-03. Compliance with the standards DIN EN-12875-2, DIN EN-12875-3 and DIN EN-12875-4 are prerequisites for the test procedure.

Dishwasher durability

Not required by law. Voluntary labelling is carried out by stating the guaranteed rinsing cycles.

Crack resistance

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-13258.

Microwave suitability

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-15284.

Metal release

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-1388-1.

Oven safety

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-13834.

Temperature resistance

Not required by law. Voluntary labeling can be done according to DIN EN-1183.

Product liability

Legally regulated by the product liability law (ProdhaftG)
