Body

In the technical language of porcelain and ceramics production, the term „body" refers to a shaped, dried or fired ceramic object which has not yet been glazed. The body is thus the final result of the composition of raw materials and firing by sintering.

Most ceramic tableware and also porcelain in its finished state consists of two components:

• The glaze (overlying and usually enclosing the body)
• The body (body made of ceramic materials, ,mostly enclosed by the glaze)

These two components are subject to different compositions, reactions and properties. The body gives the porcelain its

• concise shaping and design
• the density and porosity
• resistance to mechanical shock,
• the storage capacity of heat,
• and the colour of the crockery

In the so-called hard firing (glaze firing or glost firing), body and glaze ultimately combine to form a cup, mug, plate, bowl or other ceramic utensil.
