Relief - the embossing of porcelain and ceramic tableware

A very widespread type of decoration on tableware is found - in addition to decorative porcelain - as relief tableware. The English translation "embossed" describes the production method of this design more comprehensibly. The visible motif on the top of the item is embossed into the body during the shaping process. Relief porcelain is therefore about motifs and ornaments that are stamped into the raw material via the production mould and then covered with the glaze. The relief is a component of the porcelain body.

This property gives the relief the same stability as the item itself. Fatigue, corrosion or fading are impossible with relief tableware, unlike with many onglaze designs. The production of the mother mould for a relief article is more time-consuming than for smooth tableware. The work moulds also tire more quickly, which makes the manufacturing process of relief tableware more expensive than that of smooth articles. However, whether the production costs of relief dishes are more expensive than those of decorative porcelain depends on the type of production and the edition of a piece of tableware. Decorative porcelain requires additional operations and another firing.

Relief dishes vs. relief decorations

Reliefs are often confused with so-called relief decorations, especially if they are multi-layer decorations in white colour. To the eye, such a relief decoration appears to be the same as a genuine porcelain relief. Here is a direct comparison.

In contrast to the embossed relief (picture above left), the relief decoration is raised on the body (picture above right) and, like all other decorations, is fired onto the porcelain in an additional firing step. Due to the elevation on the body, relief decorations are subject to a higher wear factor, especially if they are applied below 900 °C in the decor firing.
