Material:
This item is made of feldspar porcelain, one of the oldest and most proven materials for degusting and presenting food and hot drinks. Because of the high firing temperature and the resulting hardness and density, it is also called hard porcelain. Feldspar porcelain is always oven-safe, suitable for the microwave and dishwasher-safe.

Quality level:
This item is classified into the quality level High Quality as the best sorting with a ratio of approx. 95/5 a-b-grade. The glaze is even and shiny. The item is free from visual flaws. In very few cases minor pinholes or light refractions can still be seen when reviewed carefully. As porcelain is a natural product, the item is "top" but not "perfect". This quality level is comparable e.g. with Bauscher, Schönwald, Rosenthal, Villeroy & Boch, RAK and many other well-known premium brands.

The special use properties of this item

As it is well known, the eye eats with you and from a certain size a serving plate matures into a real eye-catcher. Thus, the opulent size of this event plate made of reactive porcelain already raises any food - prepared and served on it - to a visual highlight. This creates attention and impression. With a proud size of 33 x 27 cm, the food and serving plate accommodates enormous capacities and arrangements, or provides an exciting setting for decorating food. In trendy restaurants, large plates are very popular because they are particularly suitable for placing fry baskets, bowls and side dishes for wedges, sticks, dips and sauces in addition to modern trendy meals such as steaks, meat and fish.

Skewers, draped diagonally, can find up to a length of 39 cm on this flat serving plate. Decorated lengthwise, fish or other meals up to 30.5 cm can be served. Next to it, there is still plenty of space for salads and side dishes. In the push business, the plates can also be extremely heated at the pass or under thermal bridges due to the high quality of the porcelain (please read below) and thus provide valuable assistance for high guest satisfaction. The flat design of this food plate facilitates the filleting and carving of meals and is therefore particularly well suited for table consumption.

However, these porcelain plates are also well suited for decorating meat, fish, cheese, sausage and cold cuts in the table service, on buffets and in the breakfast business. Clever is the possibility of combination with the smaller 27 plate, with which together you can create any buffet mosaics without any loss of space. In the modern dinner service, this modern shape replaces the classic meat plate. Its flat shape facilitates pre-portioning and cold storage, so that any number of cold cuts plates can be resupplied a la minute. The urban design of the buffet plate underlines the modern zeitgeist.

Giant 41 cm porcelain plates in gastronomic porcelain quality not only have their price, but also a decent dead weight. The plate brings just under 1.7 kg on the scale and requires corresponding when putting in and out. For this, not only the reactive glaze is of rarity, but also the huge size of diagonally 41 cm. The hard porcelain design makes the serving platter much more durable and stable than its ceramic counterparts with reactive glazes. We would have liked to make it lighter, but porcelain is one of the densest materials on earth and thus keeps the food warm much longer than, for example, tempered glass, melamine or ceramics.

The design and character of the porcelain series Carbon

The name Carbon describes an iridescent, shaded form of black and a material that we humans have coveted for centuries. We extract it from the depths of this earth. Just like the raw materials of porcelain. Thus, the name and origin of our first porcelain series of the Collection Reactive Trend.

Carbon acts on us humans power-supporting, fast, noble and expensive. Carbon combines the simplicity of a color nuance with the representation of power, success and modern zeitgeist. This explains the self-evident success of this porcelain series, which was able to enter the market from a standing start as the number one of our reactive collection. Carbon porcelain makes the presented dishes simply modern, innovative and successful.

Similar to mother of pearl shines, reflects and glitters the black porcelain viewed from different perspectives sometimes black, silver, gray or even subtle black-greenish. The slightly raised dots give the porcelain - like a hologram - seemingly different depths. Carbon is a dark, exciting glaze in which no two pieces are alike and is characterized by a high degree of uniqueness, combining modern zeitgeist with traditional, handcrafted values. Carbon sets itself apart from the ordinary and gives the food a very impressive appearance. After the initial bisque firing, the hotel porcelain is dipped in a carbon-colored glaze and fired. In another process, Metallica pigments are applied and fired one more time. This process is relatively expensive compared to monofiring, but ultimately ensures the unique design and 100% commercial suitability of the hard porcelain in reactive design.

The outstanding thing about the reactive glazes from Holst Porcelain is their combination variety among themselves. Thus, Musgo, Carbon, Coral, Arena, Granito, Moreno and Tierra can be combined to exciting and always new, homogeneous serving combinations as "mix & match porcelain". Above all, they are not only combinable with themselves, but also blend harmoniously with all white porcelain series as a deliberately arranged highlight.

The special features of the material and glaze

The outstanding feature of the articles in the "Reactive Trend" series from Holst Porcelain is the realization of a reactive glaze on high-fired feldspar porcelain above 1.320 °C. Only in this way real hard porcelain is created, whose properties are not subject to any natural aging process.

In contrast to most of the reactive tableware on the market, which is predominantly offered on a lower fired ceramic, stoneware or Vitreous China, this article is made of genuine, high-quality feldspar porcelain (hard porcelain). On the development and implementation of the reactive porcelain, we have researched more than three years together with our partner factory and invested a lot of time and money to realize this reactive tableware "fit for professional use" in the quality level hotel porcelain. In fact, originally this urban decoration type comes from fine ceramics finishing, which has matured to new popularity thanks to an English manufacturer. However, even this Vitreous China does not match the hardness and density of the real feldspathic porcelain, and therefore quickly shows fatigue in commercial use. Established porcelain manufacturers have simulated reactive porcelain via decors and simply applied the reactive pattern as a full decor on a standard colored article. In fact, this has created beautiful decor images, but the character of a handmade, urban porcelain simply cannot be implemented in style on 0-8-15 standard items.

We perceived this gap in the market as a challenge for a true porcelain professional and set to work. After three years of intensive research, we were able to present true reactive porcelain on natural, hand-crafted characterizing molds to the professional world. And that's not even cheating, because every item in the "Reactive Trend" collection is made by hand in a small porcelain manufactory with great effort and attention to detail.

Each piece is unique!

This combines the modern zeitgeist of trendy decors with the good qualities of real hard porcelain. Exactly therein lies the difference to many purely externally similar looking dishes. Unfortunately, many suppliers now describe inferior ceramic tableware as porcelain due to ignorance or incorrect information from the manufacturer. We guarantee a hard firing above 1,320 °C and that makes all the difference.

Hardness and stability of our reactive porcelain

In order to equip the porcelain mass in such a way that the reactive glaze succeeds, we had to make use of mineral additives that make the process of ion plating possible even in the high-firing range above 1,320 °C. As a quasi "unintended side effect," needle mullite formation, which is unique to porcelain, increased and further hardened the body.

The result is a porcelain that is even superior to Alumina porcelain in terms of mechanical resistance - i.e. edge impact resistance! Edge impact tests to the consequence survives our reactive porcelain even hammer blows up to 0.40 Joules. This corresponds to an incredible stability and is therefore "harder" than any commercial hotel porcelain! See for yourself in the video above the result of a series of tests.

Thermal shock and temperature resistance

Tests conducted in early 2020 have shown that our reactive tableware can withstand a temperature load of up to 350 °C. This is not particularly unusual for high-quality feldspathic porcelain. But what fascinated us ourselves were the measurements in the shock range: the tested flat parts (plates and platters) of the reactive porcelain easily withstood a thermal shock of +-182 °C. However, in order to fully test the property of thermal shock resistance, we need "official" laboratory tests. A decision to invest in this expensive and time-consuming determination procedure has not yet been made. Therefore, we can only state that in our test furnaces a thermal shock of +- 182 °C was survived without any problems. However, we cannot guarantee it at present yet! To be continued.

Please allow us to point out that there are only a few porcelain manufacturers in the world who can produce reactive glazes on high-fired hard porcelain above 1,320 °C, like our articles of the "Reactive Trend Series". More than 90% of tableware of this type offered on the market is produced on stoneware, earthenware or similar ceramic tableware.
