Material:
This item is made of feldspar porcelain, one of the oldest and most proven materials for degusting and presenting food and hot drinks. Because of the high firing temperature and the resulting hardness and density, it is also called hard porcelain. Feldspar porcelain is always oven-safe, suitable for the microwave and dishwasher-safe.
Quality level:
This item is classified into the quality level High Quality as the best sorting with a ratio of approx. 95/5 a-b-grade. The glaze is even and shiny. The item is free from visual flaws. In very few cases minor pinholes or light refractions can still be seen when reviewed carefully. As porcelain is a natural product, the item is "top" but not "perfect". This quality level is comparable e.g. with Bauscher, Schönwald, Rosenthal, Villeroy & Boch, RAK and many other well-known premium brands.

The special use properties of this item
Within the Arena, Carbon, Musgo and Tierra series, we carry two different basic shell shapes. A tall version and a shallow version. This 15 cm large side dish comes from the flat shaping and serves the majority of the portion-wise presentation of small salads, saturation side dishes such as potatoes, fries, wedges, vegetables, rice & pasta "by the side". In trendy restaurants, the 15-count porcelain bowl provides a trendy setting for a sliced curry sausage, a serving of pulled pork or even a large papa asada con salsa. Due to the high temperature resistance, the side dishes can also be baked directly in the dish. Especially when gratinating, the flat, wide shape of the porcelain dish supports a beautiful, uniform crust formation.
In the breakfast business, the dash-full 0.40 l porcelain bowl performs ideal services as a cereal bowl, Cerialienschale or even as a yogurt bowl. The flat coupform facilitates the removal of liquid or diluted food with a spoon and thus offers not only a beautiful appearance, but also a good and pleasant feel.
For 3 scoops of ice cream with cream, pudding and many other sweets and desserts, the 15 bowl can also be used perfectly as an ice cream and dessert bowl. The deliberately slightly undulating bowl edge together with the reactive design of the colored glaze reinforce the subconscious sensation of a handmade and lovingly made. This visual impulse is thus transmitted to the food served in it, even though it may have been only subtly refined or portioned. The reactive porcelain dish thus reinforces the interpretation of a dish prepared by hand with attention to detail.
Such colored porcelain dishes, by the way, also give tables covered with white porcelain a highlighting effect. Even on large, white porcelain plates, such reactive side dishes set beautiful, colorful accents and highlight even a portion of "fries" especially.
The design and character of the porcelain series Arena
The Latin or Romanesque name ARENA is the eponym of the third design line of the collection Reactive Trend of Holst Porcelain. Arena stands for sand, one of the most important mineral basic materials of this earth. Sand, or sand tones, positively stimulate us humans, ground us and connect us with nature. Sand tones are warm and natural and shine in many shades. Unlike the decors Carbon, Tierra and Musgo among others, Arena carries its reactive structure as an underglaze and is sealed with a transparent glaze like the classic hotel porcelain. Earth-colored, brown brush bands run along the edges of all Arena items, creating a distinctive color finish to the items. The gradients are irregular and emphasize the natural character of the reactive porcelain with unique shapes. At the same time, this brown forms a transition to the other design lines of the Reactive Trend collection, which can be perfectly combined with each other in a "mix & match". Depending on the effect of the light and the viewing angle, Arena's reactive glaze sometimes appears beige-brownish, blue-greenish, brown-greenish or even brown-bluish. After the initial bisquit firing, the hotel porcelain is dipped in a reactive base glaze and fired again. The reactive effect of the pigments takes place directly on the body. This process is relatively expensive compared to mono-firing, but ultimately ensures the unique design and commercial suitability of the hard porcelain.
We realize this series not on 0-8-15 standard items, but on a mold park in urban design. Far away from robots and uniform industrial porcelain, to a handcrafted production with high manufacturing expertise. Each piece is unique. This underlines the "natural feeling" and the key of this design line, which gives this reactive porcelain its claim of high independence.
The outstanding thing about the reactive glazes of Holst Porzellan is their variety of combinations among themselves. Thus, Musgo, Carbon, Coral, Arena, Granito, Moreno and Tierra can be combined to exciting and always new, homogeneous serving combinations as "mix & match porcelain". Above all, they are not only combinable with themselves, but also blend harmoniously with all white porcelain series as a deliberately arranged highlight.
The special features of the material and glaze
The outstanding feature of the articles in the "Reactive Trend" series from Holst Porcelain is the realization of a reactive glaze on high-fired feldspar porcelain above 1. 320 °C. Only in this way real hard porcelain is created, whose properties are not subject to any natural aging process.
In contrast to most of the reactive tableware on the market, which is predominantly offered on a lower fired ceramic, stoneware or Vitreous China, this article is made of genuine, high-quality feldspar porcelain (hard porcelain). On the development and implementation of the reactive porcelain, we have researched more than three years together with our partner factory and invested a lot of time and money to realize this reactive tableware "fit for professional use" in the quality level hotel porcelain. In fact, originally this urban type of decoration comes from fine ceramics finishing, which has matured to new popularity thanks to an English manufacturer. However, even this Vitreous China does not match the hardness and density of the real feldspathic porcelain and therefore quickly shows fatigue in commercial use. Established porcelain manufacturers have simulated reactive porcelain via decors and simply applied the reactive pattern as a full decor on a standard colored article. In fact, this has created beautiful decor images, but the character of a handmade, urban porcelain simply cannot be implemented in style on 0-8-15 standard items.
We perceived this gap in the market as a challenge for a true porcelain professional and set to work. After three years of intensive research, we were able to present true reactive porcelain on natural, hand-crafted characterizing molds to the professional world. And that's not even cheating, because every item in the "Reactive Trend" collection is made by hand in a small porcelain manufactory with great effort and attention to detail.
Each piece is unique!
This combines the modern zeitgeist of trendy decors with the good properties of real hard porcelain. Exactly therein lies the difference to many purely externally similar looking dishes. Unfortunately, many suppliers now describe inferior ceramic tableware as porcelain due to ignorance or incorrect information from the manufacturer. We guarantee a hard firing above 1,320 °C and that makes all the difference.
Hardness and stability of our reactive porcelain
In order to equip the porcelain mass in such a way that the reactive glaze succeeds, we had to make use of mineral additives that make the process of ion plating possible even in the high-firing range above 1,320 °C. As a quasi "unintended side effect," needle mullite formation, which is unique to porcelain, increased and further hardened the body.
The result is a porcelain, that even in terms of mechanical resistance - so the edge impact resistance - even the Alumina porcelain is superior! Edge impact tests to the consequence survives our reactive porcelain even hammer blows up to 0.40 Joules. This corresponds to an incredible stability and is therefore "harder" than any commercial hotel porcelain! See for yourself in the video above the result of a series of tests.
Thermal shock and temperature resistance
Tests conducted in early 2020 have shown that our reactive tableware can withstand a temperature load of up to 350 °C. This is not particularly unusual for high-quality feldspathic porcelain. But what fascinated us ourselves were the measurements in the thermal shock range: the tested plates of the reactive porcelain easily withstood a thermal shock of +-182 °C.However, we can not guarantee it at this time! To be continued.
Please allow us to point out that there are only a few porcelain manufacturers in the world who can produce reactive glazes on high-fired hard porcelain above 1,320 °C, like our articles of the "Reactive Trend Series". More than 90% of tableware of this type offered on the market is produced on stoneware, earthenware or similar ceramic tableware.
