Josiah Spode

Josiah Spode (* 23 March 1733 in Staffordshire; † 18 August 1797) was an English potter and founder of the English Spode pottery in Stoke-on-Trent. This became known for the high quality of its wares.

Between the years 1788 and 1793, Josiah Spode succeeded in simplifying Thomas Frye's previous recipe for bone china in his factory to such an extent that it became the new standard for all English wares of this kind as fine bone china, since it was not only fine, white and translucent, but also cheap to produce and attractive to the buying public.
