The porcelain jugs, carafes, pourers and jugs in the Auberge range combine design and functionality in their formal language. A porcelain carafe must not only look good, it must also meet a wide range of practical requirements for different uses. The four decanters in the Krug Auberge series were one of the first series we designed ourselves at Holst Porzellan in 1997. The last thing customers and inexperienced users need is to suffer a mishap when pouring into unfamiliar hollow containers. The liquid is literally 'thrown' out of the decanter when it is tipped over. Cylindrical jugs are difficult to balance, as they shift their centre of gravity when poured. By contrast, a belly jug releases the liquid contents only slowly, without altering the drink's essential centre of gravity. A belly jug is also safer on the table and much better protected against tipping over due to the weight of the head than modern, slender jugs.
A seamless jug interior, especially at the inner junctions with the handle, is essential for cleaning or rinsing jugs and therefore for the hygienic stability of the contents during the next service. 8 out of 10 porcelain jugs from other brands have hollow junctions between the handle and the inner body, which leads to poor washing results. We maintain that a handle that is open on the inside can never be 100% washed. The handle should not be flat. Sharp edges or corners are uncomfortable to hold. The handles of the Auberge series are rounded and thicker than those of other manufacturers, making them secure and pleasant to grip. The delicate hands of women can grasp Auberge porcelain jugs as well and as securely as the large hands of men.
Designing the overall proportions of a pitcher to allow for turning upside down and not tipping over in the dishwasher or on the washing rack was the most challenging aspect of the project. However, we have successfully implemented all these usage characteristics in the Auberge series, creating a range of jugs that meets both the demanding criteria of professional hosts and the emotional perception of consumers.
Glass carafes are the best choice for buffets because they allow contents to be distinguished more quickly. Porcelain carafes are ideal for milk and cocoa. Different types of milk, as well as organic milk, skimmed milk, hot and cold milk, coffee cream and vegan milk substitute can be served perfectly thanks to the different sizes and contents. The four sizes in the Auberge decanter series offer capacities (full lines) of 0.30, 0.50, 1.0 and 2.2 litres. The large Auberge decanter is perfect for sangria and fruit bowls. Finally, porcelain carafes are the superior choice because they do not form unsightly rims or ridges, maintain the temperature better and are more aesthetically pleasing than glass carafes.
