Model

The "model" of a porcelain item should not be confused with the design! The design corresponds to the final shape of the item produced later, while the model represents the production template for mould making, which must be enlarged proportionally by the shrinkage.

In traditional porcelain production, the model serves as a casting template for the pre-mould, which has been created by the pattern maker or, in the meantime, by a 3D printer. In many cases, the factory's own pattern makers are so artistically skilled that they cover design and pattern making in one person.

State-of-the-art computer technology is now able to completely replace the manual work of the pattern maker and can even create digital data sets from virtual templates, which can then be used directly in CNC technology to produce a master mould. Although this virtual model cannot be touched, this data record is also referred to as a model.
