The finishing is an important part of the final quality of the porcelain! From our product information (glazes) you have learned that real hard porcelain has a Mohs hardness of 8. Therefore it is more resistant than steel! After hard firing, the surfaces of the porcelain are still uneven and rough. Smaller deposits (firing residues), which have bonded with the base surfaces of the porcelain during hard firing, must be reworked and removed.  In conventional factories this is done with grinding wheels, grinding belts or flexible shafts, modern plants work with automatic grinding machines. Due to the hardness of porcelain, regrinding is a relatively expensive process, as only high-quality abrasive materials (e.g. diamond belts) can be used.

Holst Porzellan still has the majority of its goods sanded by hand (as of 12/2013). On the one hand, to save the high investment costs for expensive equipment and, on the other hand, because large automated lines can only work profitably with really large runs. Smaller, justifiable defects on the top of the porcelain are passed on to finishers, i.e. to the decor production. With a chic, strong decor, many small details are hardly noticeable.
