Body tolerances of porcelain

Porcelain is made from mineral raw materials and high heat. After shaping, the porcelain body can lose up to 25% of its original proportions, depending on the type and manufacture. This process is called shrinkage. This form of mass loss cannot be controlled exactly.

Porcelain usually does not have "exactly" the same wall thickness! Semi-automatically or manually produced tableware has higher tolerance values than fully automatically produced porcelain. Semi-automatic or handmade porcelain has higher tolerance values than fully automatic porcelain.

Since each manufacturer specifies different thicknesses of cullet for the production process, no generally applicable rule can be derived with regard to wall thickness. But even a change in wall thickness of 1 mm can change the weight of a piece of tableware by up to 10%.
