Hand Glaze

Manual hand glazing in porcelain production

Traditional hand glazing is the manual method of dip glazing. This glazing method is often used in traditional porcelain factories in Asia and in small porcelain factories. In ultra-modern factories, however, fully automated glazing lines ensure a smooth glaze.

How manual hand glazing works in porcelain production

1. The body (unglazed porcelain body) is individually dipped into the liquid glaze by hand. Most factories either use a special rack or dip the body into the liquid glaze by hand (wearing gloves).

2. In the glaze tank, the employee must ensure that he keeps the body in motion in order to distribute the glaze evenly over the body. It is sufficient for the body to spend 2-3 seconds in the liquid glaze.

3. The porcelain body is then removed from the glaze bath. This requires special dexterity on the part of the employees, as the body must be skilfully turned. This prevents so-called glaze noses in the end product.
