Drainage

The special advantages of drainage grooves

Hollow porcelain items, such as bowls, drinking cups and upper cups with a bottom ring drainage, favour the drainage of residual rinsing water when placed at an angle in washing baskets, dishwashing lines, front loaders and household dishwashers. Due to their design, ceramic hollow parts generally always have a slightly concave base, in which residual water tends to collect during washing. The duration and temperature of the post-drying process are not sufficient to vaporise such residual water.

The drainage grooves support better drainage of the residual rinse water from such "floor puddles" and thus contribute to a better rinsing result. Residual rinse water always contains natural residues from water hardness (lime, quartz and crystals), which combine with the chemistry of the detergent. If such residual water runs down the dishes after the drying process, clearly visible and very unsightly drips, streaks and soiling form. The effects are even worse in household dishwashers that wash on two levels. The residual rinse water from the upper level then even runs over the wash ware on the lower level and soils cutlery and flatware. Although we are not a laboratory technology institute, we are firmly convinced that such residual rinsing water is not necessarily beneficial to health. In passthrough dishwashers and industrial dishwashers, the drainage drains only fully fulfil their purpose if appropriately designed wash racks are used. Flat baskets only, in which cups, mugs and bowls are washed upside down, are not suitable for utilising the full functionality of the floor drains.

We therefore recommend "cup racks" designed for this purpose for washing cups and mugs, which ensure that the residual rinsing water drains away completely thanks to their "sloping base" design. However, whether the use of hollow parts with drainage bases is really absolutely necessary to achieve a good washing result when using high-quality sloping-bottom dishwasher baskets is a matter of judgement. At Holst Porzellan, we stock drinking cups, mugs and bowls with and without drainage bases. In conclusion, however, it is quite justified to say that drainage bases make it easier and better for residual rinsing water to run off.
